  • SCUBA Full Face Masks?

    hi

i am doing scuba diving an i think it is amazing

i was just wondering whats it feels like to wear a full face mask because some people say its easier to use, but some people say its harder and can be too tight around the head.

    thxSCUBA Full Face Masks?
the reason some say it's to tight is because they probly have a misfitted mask and are compensating for it by having to over tighten to prevent leaks.

Take the time to get a good fitting and shouldnt have any problems. It dose take some additionl traing as it changes the way you perform buddy breating and such.

I only use it on ice or cold water dives the rest of the time I enjoy the feel of the water on face.SCUBA Full Face Masks?
They're not used that much for recreational diving. They're mostly used for industrial or military work. One problem is you have to find one that fits your face well which is harder to do than when you just have a mask and a regulator - also if someone's regulator near you malfunctions, it's a lot harder to share your air with them until they get to the surface.

    Scuba Masks advice please';?

    Hi All,

I recently passed my PADI open water diving certification while in Phuket, one problem I constantly had during every dive was my mask filling up with water, it was never really ';clear'; as soon as I cleared it (by breathing thru my nose and holding my head back) it would clear for a min or 2, then slowly fill again.

I tried 3 different masks all filled up, one of the instructors told me this is because I have a Goatee beard (hair on my top lip) so the mask cannot seal correctly,, could this be true, and if it is true are there any tips you can give on how to keep my mask clear without having to shave off my beloved Goatee?

    thanks!Scuba Masks advice please';?
My husband had the same problem. He tried on quite a few masks before he found the best fit for him (so what if it was pink?). He put vaseline on his moustache and that helped a bit so you might want to try that. He also has deep smile lines so there is a bit of a gap at the bottom of his cheeks. Nothing you can really do about that. He has since shaved off his moustache and his mask still leaks a bit, but not as much as it did previously.

Yours seems to be filling up very fast so maybe you don't have the best fit you could have.

Some masks are designed for small, medium or large faces. Ask the advice of your dive shop. A smaller mask (one with lower internal volume) will usually give you the best fit. To see if you have the proper fit, follow these steps:

    1. Touch mask to face - Put the mask up to your face and stop when it is barely touching your face. Ideally the mask should touch all around your face at the same time. Do not press the mask hard onto your face.

    2. Check skirt - Check around your temples and the smile lines between your nose and corners of your mouth since this is the most common area for leaks. There should be no gaps between the skirt and your skin. If you see big gaps, move on to another mask.

    3. Inhale - Sniff in lightly through your nose to to create a vacuum on the mask. The mask should stay in place without any straps or hands holding it in place. If you have to keep on inhaling to keep the mask on, try another mask.

    4. Exhale - Exhale through your nose to remove the mask.

The most important step to getting the correct fit is to check the skirt as it is barely touching your face. The proper skirt fit will do the most to making sure your mask doesn't leak.

Hope this helps. I know a mask that leaks that much can be a pain. Good luck.Scuba Masks advice please';?
vaseline on the mustach before putting on the mask may help.
You didn't say how old you are.

If you have smile lines on your face, particularly the junction between your mouth/lip muscles and your cheeks, water can easily get inside your mask through those lines. This would be in addition to improper sealing that a goatee might cause.

Best bet I think is to keep trying different masks, doing the sealing test in air to make sure that it will seal on your face properly. You may want to ask your local dive shop for masks that fit well with goatees; the staff there should be more than happy to help you out with that. My PADI instructor had a goatee and had a mask that sealed on his face, so it's definitely doable!
if ya wanna keep your beloved Goatee, then buy some vaseline.
During the winter, I have a full beard. During the summer I don't. There's a reason behind that and it has to do with your question. :)

Your instructor is quite right in that hair on your upper lip is definitely going to be a factor. It may not be the entire cause though and could also be that your face shape and the masks you've tried still aren't all that compatible. Still, I don't have any dive pals that even with a great fit mask and hair under their schnoze, don't get some flooding happening.

How deep can a scuba diver be certified for with tanks of compressed air and a scuba mask?

The recognized limit is 130 feet for an advanced level recreational diver on air. This is not necessarily the limit that a technical diver may restrict himself to. It's not uncommon for a experienced tech diver that dives within their ability, to go to 150 to 170 feet on normal air. I've known a few that have dived 240 feet on a regular basis. They also happen to be experienced and have the proper training and equipment and observe decompression obligations.

That number of 130 feet is just that. A number that the certifying agencies have come up with for the average diver with average equipment and training, that in most cases will be safe for the diver.

The reverse can be true as well. There are some divers who can't get to 90 feet without being seriously nitrogen impaired.

The person that answered that you need a ';nitrous cert'; below 150 feet, and actually plans on diving a nitrox mix at that depth or below...is a dead diver. Nitrox is actually just meant to increase your bottom time but it's a gas that can't be employed deep. Doing so, at 120 feet or more (depending on the mix, even shallower) can actually give you a O2 tox hit, killing you.

What they are probably thinking of is tri mix, a hypoxic gas mix, that has LESS, not more O2. That can actually be used deeper as it can overcome to a degree, both nitrogen narcosis issues as well as O2 toxicity, as long as the mix used is rated for the depth it's employed. How deep can a scuba diver be certified for with tanks of compressed air and a scuba mask?
The recreational dive limit is 130 feet. How deep can a scuba diver be certified for with tanks of compressed air and a scuba mask?
Scuba certifications go something like this:

    Open water: 60feet

    Advanced : 100feet

    Advanced Deep: 130

    Technical Decompression: 150

    Extended Range 180-200

I personally do not like going much beyond 200' on air since I get 'narked' and it feels like someone is watching me at that depth. Also as another diver responded, you take Nitrox, or oxygen enriched air deep like that and you are asking for trouble. Nitrox is designed to give you more dive time in SHALLOWER dives, not to take you deeper. On trimix, or a mixture of helium, oxygen, and nitrogen, depths are limited only by your credit card company. The deeper you go, the higher pressure the gas you breathe, thus you consume more on each breath. There have been extreme record dives beyond 1000', but that required literally tons of scuba tanks and support people, and it took over 24 hours of decompression for them to return to the surface. Keep in mind this is not on air.

I have been to 200, a friend of mine hit 257' on a photo shoot of a U-boat wreck, but the standard accepted 'limit' for deep diving is 218' on air. at that depth each breathful of 'air' contains as much oxygen as if you took 1.6 breathfuls of pure oxygen, or 8 times as much as at the surface. Beyond 218, the risks of falling unconscious or having a seizure due to Oxygen levels become very high.
150 to 180 ft then you require a deep diver cert. Or nitrous cert.

    It will work!

You could have problems if you where in the opposite situation.

Snorkel masks could be something like Apnea's and are very tight to your skin so there is less space so you don't have to waste air to compensate. Scuba masks are bigger and there is more space between your skin and the glass and so you need more air to compensate, but you don't mind about it because you have all the air you need just behind you on your back! Anyway scuba masks are better to dive because have a bigger glass sou you can enjoy better the environment that surrounds you!!
Yes it will work just fine. Triple Padi certified.
Yes , if it doesn't leak, and you get proper training...
A snorkle mask and a SCUBA mask are more or less the same thing. While there are masks specialy designed for one activity or the other, either one will do just fine.
hey stick with a good dive mask....and make sure the dive shop helps you fit it right, the proper way to buy one is, take the mask and apply it to your face, suck the air in through you nose and it should hold there, making a nice seal on your face, when you go to pull it away it shouldn't come off that easy....again stay with a good dive mask, little more durable and better prep viz too

    Scuba diving mask?

How should i store my scuba diving mask? It is transparent and made out of silicon. I don't dive frequently - i.e won't use use the mask during long periods (more than one year). Is there a way to avoid it becoming yellow and the silicone getting too much ';elastic';?

    Thanks!Scuba diving mask?
Just put it in a box in the closet I guess. Sun is probably the enemy. Don't hang it from the strap either.Scuba diving mask?
UV light causes the yellowing effect; therefore, store it somewhere not in the sun light.

Also, if you use it that infrequently, make sure you store it in a manner that doesn't fold the skirt of the mask. You don't it to be deformed the next time you use it.

If you use it in salt water, make sure you give it a good cleaning (warm water and mild soap) before you store it. You don't want salt crystals to form on the lens and then rub against something.
The best way is to clean it thoroughly, dry it thoroughly, put it in the box (if you have one) and store it in the dark (away from UV light).
Rinse it with fresh water, leave it to dry (away from the direct sunlight) and put it in its box. You should get it out from the box from time to time to make it breathe !!!!
    All of the above AND

Don't store it with any other gear like fins that may be black or another color. Clear silicone will absorb colors from your other gear.

Best scuba/snorkel mask for a wide face?

Hi, i'm looking for a new dive mask. i have a large face (wear an 8-1/8 fitted cap) and am having trouble finding a good mask for free diving and scuba.

Any help greatly appreciated.Best scuba/snorkel mask for a wide face?
You need to go to a dive shop and try some on. There are many brands and sizes.Best scuba/snorkel mask for a wide face?
I have a very wide face also.

I used to use a Mares X-vision (or Clear vision which is the single-lens version similar to your Tusa). I thought it was the best fit in the world.

    THEN I found the Atomic masks (they only make 2, one twin-lens and one single). They are called (twin lens) ';Subframe'; and (single lens) ';Frameless';

Try these they are available in black or clear skirt and have a long guarantee on the frame.

    Scuba Diving Mask tips?

I'm planning on buying a diving mask(finally, so i don't have to rent one) and i was wondering, which is better, a mask WITHOUT a purge valve or one WITH?

which one is easier to clear the water from (like when you are suppose to retrieve your mask and put it back on)?

Thank you for the advise :)Scuba Diving Mask tips?
Having one with a purge may make it easier fo a no hands mask clearing for small mask floods ( not always the case) but, it's also a device that can malfunction. Debris can get stuck under the valve seat causing it to leak. That area can be tricky to clean too. Mould likes to accumulate there.

I've owned both purges and non purges. I've finally found a non purge that fits so well that I rarely if ever need to clear it so, my vote is to lean towards the best fitting non purge you can find. One less thing to potentially cause a distraction or go wrong and they're usually a little cheaper than the same mask model that's fitted with a purge.Scuba Diving Mask tips?
I have bought many masks over the years and have never used a purge valve. One of the best tips I got was after purchasing the mask was to wash it with toothpaste and rinse it out, this way it won't fog up on you in the water. Another tip is to try on many types to see what is most comfortable for you. Learning the proper way to clear your mask is the most effective not a purge valve. Also I would practice clearing your mask in a swimming pool.
Personaly i use a mask without a valve

And as a padi instructor i always teach new divers to use a mask with no valve

its ok to use a mask with a valve but do

some training with it in a pool

If you put a scuba face mask on underwater, how do you get all the water out?

Mr Buzz almost has it, but not quite.

Yes, you look up but you don't pull the mask entirely off your face. You only lift the bottom off, keeping the rest of the mask skirt in place against your forehead and upper cheeks. Exhale through your nose and the water is forced out. Let go of your mask and you're done. This works for all standard masks.

If you have a mask with a purge valve installed, you only need to exhale through your nose once you mask is on. The purge valve is a one way valve that will let the water escape through it as you blow out your nose..If you put a scuba face mask on underwater, how do you get all the water out?
you look upwards and pull the mask from your face. breath into it so it fills with air then (KEEPING IT FACIG UPWARDS SO NO WATER FLOWS IN) lower it back to your face.

it works because the air rushes into the mask and prevents the water from entering. same thing happens when a kayak turns upside downIf you put a scuba face mask on underwater, how do you get all the water out?
Just press on the top bit and breath out, this gets rid of 98% of the water, you won't notice the rest, Enjoy )

Scuba mask problems... is my mask going to hold up?

I'm taking the scuba certification course at my college, and we are going to the beach to do our check-out dives next weekend. i just noticed that the lenses have tiny cracks along the edges, near the frame. 1- does anyone know what may have cause these cracks and 2- when i dive in deeper water, will my mask hold up to the pressure? the cracks look like stress fractures. i take good care of all my equipment and the mask is not a cheap walmart mask, it is an oceanic, ion 4 series. i didn't think that a (supposedly) high quality mask would do this after only being used in a 10ft deep swimming pool.Scuba mask problems... is my mask going to hold up?
Cracks in a new mask ought to have been noticed by yourself fairly quickly. You are diving now and your gear is always paramount.

Personally, I'd take it back to the shop you bought it from. You DID buy it from a dive shop and not online, right? Online and you may not have any recourse. This is one of the reasons buying some dive gear online can bite you in the **** and why I can't stand the practice. If you did the sensible thing and bought from a shop, ask if what you're seeing is normal for that mask. It may not be cracks, it may be something else. I can't see it, so I can't advise otherwise.

One thing I can say is that it won't matter the depth...but you knew that since you took the course. Think about it and you'll get it.If you don't, ask your Instructor to go over equalization again, then you will :)Scuba mask problems... is my mask going to hold up?
The cracks could have been there when you first received the mask, and they just increased by being under a little pressure. I'm pretty sure Oceanic has a warranty on that product--you might want to check it out. It would be their fault. No, don't dive with a mask that could potentially harm you. It could break under more pressure. If you don't have warranty on the mask, try renting one for your certification dive (or even if it does have warranty, you may need the mask before they can replace it). Be sure to take the mask back to your dealer after you research the warranty.

No I would not recognize you. Unless I saw a cartoon guy walking around I would think it was you.
Of course not, those are like the chances of recognizing me on the street. What kind of street has a sign that say No Walking?
    Yep, I could.
    no
    sure
I would not. But then, because I wear alligator boots would you do the same?
I reckon you should change your name to 'scubuffoon'

Sure your the guy with the wet suit on.
Maybe if I heard your voice.
Yeah probably cause you could see your eyes. and on tv dont they usually cover your eyes with a black square when you dont want to be on tv or they didnt get your permission.
I would never forget those eyes..
    Sure most likely!

    Scuba mask-off problems?

Today I did my first confined scuba dives. It was great, except when I took my mask off underwater. When breathing normally through my regulator, my nose keeps on blowing bubbles, whether I'm inhaling or exhaling. My instructor says he has never seen something like it. What is my problem?Scuba mask-off problems?
I don't think that there is actually physically anything wrong with you. It might just be a delay from your previous exhalation from the air in your sinus cavities. In scuba you are taught to inhale deeper and exhale a little more than normal. As long as there is no pain in the sinus area as you descend there shouldn't be a problem.

You may notice this by breathing in through your mouth and exhaling through your nose and mouth at the same time. The time it takes for the air to be exhaled through the mouth is shorter than the length of time to exhale through your nose.

As long as you aren't having water going up the nose you are probably the envy of those who have mask clearing problems.

Why dose your nose have to be in a mask while scuba diving?

    Two reasons:

    1. To equalize the mask. Similar to the the pressure that builds in your ears when you dive deeper, the same thing happens with a mask. You need to exhale into the mask to equalize the pressure.

    2. In the event that you get water in the mask, there is a way to clear the water out of the mask while exhaling out of your nose. Now, I have messed around and exhaled out of my regulator and caught the bubbles to clear me mask, but using your nose is easier. Why dose your nose have to be in a mask while scuba diving?
The main reason why your nose needs to be in your mask is to allow you to put air into the mask as you descend to equalize the pressure with that of the surrounding water, otherwise the squeeze effect would make the wearing of the mask uncomfortable. A mask is worn to enable one to see underwater. Why dose your nose have to be in a mask while scuba diving?
because as u r descending you have to clear your ears and in order 2 do so it needs to be covered. also, it makes it very difficult to breath through your mouth (through your regulator) if your nose isn't covered. There are many other reasons also though
It definitely has to do with breathing. Also, if there's an emergency, you're probably more likely to panic and try to breathe through your nose. You ingest water and it's a terrible feeling (trust me, I've done it).
Not a scuba diver but I think it has something to do with breathing.
to keep you from inhaling water
so you won't breath in water

    Another Scuba Mask Question?

You guys did such a great job with my last one...

I saw a guy with a black buckle/strap device on his mask.

The Mask straps went through it and to tighten the straps you just pulled on the ends leaving the ends in the back behind your head as opposed to on the sides of your head.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? What is it called.

I need to learn how to clear my mask for scuba. Can somebody help?

You are using the term ';mask clearing';. That means exactly that, clearing the mask of water. I see everyone else is assuming you mean ';mask defogging';, which is not what you have asked.

There are two methods of mask clearing.

If your mask has a built in purge valve, it's a simple matter of holding your mask against your face and exhaling out of your nose. The purge valve is located directly under your nose and will open to let the water out. It shuts when you stop exhaling through your nose.

The second and more common way, is to get your body vertical in the water column, tilt your head back a bit and with a free hand lift the bottom edge of your mask away from your face and exhale through your nose at the same time. Continue exhaling until the water is gone and you have seated the mask back on your face. This forces most of the water out of your mask.

If you find that you're constantly having to do a mask clearing, there are three possible culprits.

1/ That mask simply doesn't fit. Your face is unique, masks are mass produced to fit many but not all people. Test fit them in the store before purchase, without using the mask strap. Place it against your face and inhale a bit from your nose with your mouth shut. If it doesn't stay on for 30 seconds at least, it isn't a good fit. Move on to the next mask.

2/ Your mask strap is on too tight. Too tight mucks up the seal on the mask skirt. Try loosening the strap.

3/ You have hair trapped under the mask skirt or the skirt isn't seated correctly. If you're diving cold and have a hood on, you also may have part or all of the hood under the mask skirt. I've seen warm water divers put the entire mask skirt on over a hood, believing that was correct. They found the hard way, it wasn't.

For your pool and eventual OW dives, eventually the instructor will have you do a complete mask removal and replacement with clearing. It's no issue, just remember to inhale through the reg and exhale through your nose as you put that mask on. When you're done, he'll likely give you a handshake for a job well done.I need to learn how to clear my mask for scuba. Can somebody help?
Spit in it and rub it around (the inside) before you don it.I need to learn how to clear my mask for scuba. Can somebody help?
I was going to jump in on this one but scubabob did an excellent job. I still have a slight problem clearing my mask but it is because it is high visibility so it can hold a lot of water. If you are just learning, get a low profile mask that fits properly and it will only take you about half a breath to clear the mask. good luck
Before you go into the water use a defog chemical they sell at just about every dive shop - it's usually in a small bottle about 1oz. Spit works but not as good - better to use for snorkeling as you can defog as you swim.
    Take a lesson.
    ScubaBob is correct.... again.

Don't go too cheap - its more important that it fits coz if your mask constantly floods then you'll not be able to dive at all.

Hold the mask against your face without the strap around your head, breath in and if the mask stays on your face, it fits.

Which is best on a swimming/scuba mask; a rubber or vinyl seal/skirt?

I'm looking to buy a scuba mask for my upcoming holiday, I've found one that's pretty good but I have the choice of a rubber or vinyl seal/skirt.

    What's the difference?Which is best on a swimming/scuba mask; a rubber or vinyl seal/skirt?
Are you sure that one of those options isn't silicone? That's usually what a good mask's skirt is made of. Rubber and vinyl both break down under sun exposure fairly quickly as compared to silicone. Rubber or vinyl also eventually crack in that process. Silicone just discolours.

If those two choices were the only two available, I'd opt for the rubber ( I've never heard of vinyl being used) since it would be more flexible and offer a better fit.Which is best on a swimming/scuba mask; a rubber or vinyl seal/skirt?
Before you order, visit some shops locally and try that same model mask on. It won't matter what material the skirt is made of if it doesn't fit properly. Report Abuse

Can you buy one when you get to your destination? I prefer to try one on to make sure I can get a good seal ( put it on without the strap and inhale thru nose, if it stays on the seal is good) I'm not sure of the different seals you mentioned, if buying on line get one asap so you can return it if it doesn't fit.

    at SEARS $24.99 each
most manufacturers of dive masks have masks that can be supplied with corrective lenses. tusa, oceanic, aqualung and so on all have models of dive mask that can be supplied with these lenses. just a quick look in the tusa mag i have here there appears to be 7 different masks that can have lenses ranging from -1.5 diopters to -8.0 in .5 increments.

any good dive shop should be able to help you out with this.

i also do know of a product that has stick on lenses that stick to the inside od your lenses.these are cheaper. sorry i cant help with the product name right now but again, a good dive shop should be able to help.

Go visit several store and fine the masks in your price range.

Fit, form, function and comfort are the basic rules for choosing the right equipment. When you find the mask and snorkel that fills your requirement in the price range that you have. Then you will know which one you need to buy. What is a good mask and snorkel for scuba diving for under $70?
I bought a mask and dry top snorkel off ebay for around $50.

I'd recommend spending a little more and getting a mask with a bigger skirt or whatever it's called

Make sure your snorkel is a dry top snorkel (Here's the one I own http://cgi.ebay.com/DRY-TOP-DIVING-SCUBA-SNORKEL-SNORKELING-WATER-SPORTS_W0QQitemZ360174213148QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item53dc0e581c%26amp;_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 [mine has a light on it] but I didn't see this one and likely would have got this one instead: http://cgi.ebay.com/IST-SN-50-Scuba-Diving-Dry-Top-Purged-Snorkel-BK-Yellow_W0QQitemZ320402377548QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item4a99784b4c%26amp;_trksid=p3286.c0.m14).
You can't really get advice on a 'good' mask. Everyones face will be different. The way to check if it's a good seal is stick it on your face without using the strap. Breathe in through your nose and if the mask sucks onto your face without letting any air in it's a good seal.

Can't help you with the snorkel I'm afraid. I threw mine away years ago.
Good snorkel for scuba diving? Easy. You do not really need one. The cheapest one will do. Good mask is trickier. Mask should sit tight on your face making proper air seal. It should be comfortable as well. Hard to advise anything. You just have to try for yourself.
Go to a dive store and get one. You need to try it on to make sure it will seal correctly. Don't buy a prepackaged mask. It may not fit right.
Speedo is probably the best buy you can get because I have a snorkle set from them and its still perfect after 5 years.
just go to a dive shop or sports store and they should all work great.

  • Why would you spit in your scuba mask?

    Ok so I'm watching 'Dirty Jobs' on the Discovery channel. Mike is scuba diving into a hippo tank, and the guys who works at the Aquarium gave him the mask to go down, and he asks ';Did you spit in your mask?'; and Mike says ';I thought they just did that in the movies.';

    1) I've never seen anyone do that in the movies.

    2) Why are you supposed to do that?

Just seems odd to me..Why would you spit in your scuba mask?
It keeps it from fogging up. It works, but there are store bought products that work much better. Why would you spit in your scuba mask?
it is a way to prevent fogging which sucks because you can;t clear it while underwater. licking, spitting, or rubbing the insides of a mask with oils from the skin work but spitting is by far the best.
It helps prevent condesation from forming in your mask which keeps it nice and crystal clear so you can see all the fishes!!!
    so it doesn't fog up
Stops the face glass misting up
Saliva keeps the mask from fogging up. Swimmers do it to goggles as well.
some people say that spitting in your goggles prevents fogging.
True, you can use spit but it really doesn't seem to be as effective as defog that is sold in dive shops and some sporting goods stores. Baby shampoo works well too. My favorite is liquid dish soap! I know, it doesn't sound like a good idea but hear me out.

Wet your goggles and place one drop for goggles. Masks may need more. Spread the liquid evenly. RINSE WELL (I give my mask a few shakes in the water) to avoid stinging later on. Do not use your fingers to rinse because you will remove the film. Your fingers have oils that will cause your goggles to fog too.

The reason I like dish soap because it is cheap and readily available. Most are biodegradable.

Why it works...after washing, dish soap leaves a 'sheeting film' that prevents dishes from leaving water spots on dishes. It is gone after it evaporates. When you wear a mask or in this case goggles it traps moisture inside so it doesn't evaporate.

You may have to reapply if you remove your goggles for too long or often. Remember to rinse it well. I have used this for hundreds of diving customers with no allergic reaction but if you do get irritation, discontinue
Yes it does seem odd, but for some reason it helps with the fog.
    1) I've never seen anyone do that in the movies or real life lol wow yeah it does seem odd
    why would you do that????
It is supposed to keep the inside of the mask from fogging up.
A bit of saliva on the inside glass helps stop it misting up.

Is there a way to seal up a cracked lens on a scuba mask?

Get rid of it. The pain-in-the-a** potential is too great. Plus, do you want this big glued-up line in your face all the time? Save yourself the heartache and the risk of lost dives due to a defective mask, and get a new one.Is there a way to seal up a cracked lens on a scuba mask?
    Scuba grade sealer (silicone)

sometimes it is labeled as Scuba GlueIs there a way to seal up a cracked lens on a scuba mask?
I would replace the mask since the potential for a catastrophic failure on the lense is great. Even using some sealants the structural integrity of the glass is still compromise. Remember that preasure at depht is a very substantial force. Get a new mask my friend. Good luck

    How to clean Scuba mask?

My Scuba mask looks a little yellow in some places and there are some white spots on it. I tried the toothpaste trick but it still is dirty. How to clean Scuba mask?
The yellow is likely the silicone of the mask skirt degrading. Usually due to long exposure to sunlight. You may get some of the surface stuff off, but it tends to discolour right through the silicone so there will still be some showing no matter what you use to clean it with.

Mild dish soap and rinse well is what most use. The white spots could be mold. Do what you can with that tooth brush and soap on them. How to clean Scuba mask?
I don't know that you can get that off. You could try the old soap and hot water thing. The best way to avoid this is to wash it really well after you use it. Then keep in covered.

If you are an ugly person then keep it on

Can you use a snorkel mask for scuba diving?

Decent SCUBA mask and fins for a good price?

I'm new to SCUBA diving and I'm looking for a decent mask and fins that aren't too expensive.Decent SCUBA mask and fins for a good price?
Mike, no one can answer this question but you.

A good mask is one that fits you properly. It may cost 50 bucks, it may cost 150 bucks. It all depends on your face. Get into a dive shop and start trying them on. The best way to find a good fit is to do the following:

1/ Place the mask against your face, do NOT put the strap on, let it hang.

2/ Inhale slightly from your nose. Remove the hand holding the mask.

3/ If that mask stays without any interference from you ( no cheating by inhaling again) for 25-30 seconds, then you found an ok fit. Longer than that, a really good fit. Put that mask in the ';maybe'; pile or '; Yeah baby!'; pile. If the mask falls before the time is up..it's a reject, don't bother with looking at it again no matter how much you like it's colour, style or price. It doesn't fit you and will constantly flood. It may be a high end, full of features, 150 dollar mask but it's absolutely useless for you and using saran wrap over sun glasses would probably be preferable.

4/ Re test and price compare the ';maybe'; pile and ';Yeah Baby!!!'; pile of masks and take your pick from them. Those work for your face. The Yeah Baby's will be better for your fit but the maybe's will work too.

As for your fins. Again...it's you who answers this question. What works for some people doesn't work for others. Some like splits, some like blades. It depends a lot on your kick style. For example, I can't use splits. For me they're slow and I go nowhere fast. I can beat anyone I know with my old Blades because that's my kick style and I can go forever on them. The reverse may be true for you. Get out there and start trying them on in real world conditions. Rent for awhile or borrow different sets until you find something you like.Decent SCUBA mask and fins for a good price?

How deep can a scuba diver be certified for with tanks of compressed air and a scuba mask?

This is a duplicate question so I'll just bring my answer from the other one, over here.

How deep can a scuba diver be certified for with tanks of compressed air and a scuba mask?

What is the best way to De-Fog a scuba Mask?

As already suggested, try using spit. The important things to remember are to treat the inside of the mask when it's still dry and to let it dry before using the mask. This can take a short while, but it's worth the wait.

If you're diving, you can always let a little water into the mask and that will keep it clear while you dive without being a nuisance. What is the best way to De-Fog a scuba Mask?

Spit in the mask and rub it around.

I use toothpaste to clean everything on my mask. It worked for a mask that had been sitting at the bottom of a lake for years. It was completely gunked up with algae everywhere and after a good scrubbing and rinse it's fine to wear. One of my buddies uses it now since her mask is broken.

Good luck with your cleaning. How do i clean a scuba mask?
Use a non-abrasive soap, like Ivory Soap. Hand clean with a soft cloth like a chamois. Make sure all soap residue is off the mask by thoroughly rinsing it after the washing. It is probably best to not only rinse your gear after every outing, but to clean it as above, especially if the gear is used infrequently.
use toothpast to get the flim off of it then just keep it in a contairn and clean it every now and then hope that helps

Do purge dive masks work well?

I loved my first purge mask. It was so easy to clear. But...I got so used to having no water in my mask that it made me fearful to even think about my mask flooding. So, I got a regular non-purge mask and now I feel more confident. I completely flooded my mask a year ago and I was just fine. One other thing...my husband said that he could always see me breathing out through my nose when I wore my purge mask. We figured that I would be in for quite a shock if the mask got knocked off of my head. So now my regular mask has forced me to not breathe out through my nose. Most divers do not like purge masks, but some do. Try both and see what makes you feel most comfortable.Do purge dive masks work well?
It probably depends on the individual mask and how well it's made. I haven't used one myself, but I once saw someone who had sealed up his purge valve with silicone caulk, so I guess it didn't work well for him. The flap may wear out over time, so if you get one you should try to find one where the purge valve is replaceable.Do purge dive masks work well?
Not worth the extra cost usually associated with them. They work, but you usually have to hold onto your mask when purging, so you're still bringing your hand up to your face. My first mask was a purge and I've not ever bought another because I just couldn't justify spending the extra for a function that was of no real value in the long run. You also have a new little nook and cranny that collect debris. The valve may not seal 100% if there's a wad of crap in it.

  • BDC or Dive Computer Or Regulator Or New Mask+Fins+snorkel??

trying to get new scuba equipment which should i choose first??BDC or Dive Computer Or Regulator Or New Mask+Fins+snorkel??
Personal gear is always first. (mask, fins, snorkel). The BC and regs would actually be number two and three in your purchase order and usually people will purchase them at the same time. A dive computer is considered a luxury item as you're not required to have one, you are taught to use your tables first anyway.BDC or Dive Computer Or Regulator Or New Mask+Fins+snorkel??
Mask fins %26amp; snorkel, is very good to have more becouse is the most personal equipment, but they are also the BCD its very importan and you can choice the one fit on you shape. they are somany model also..

    angie 隆

    www.diversitydiving.com
Your personal gear is should be purchased first, mask, fins, and snorkel, for comfort and hygene you will want these, and they may be required in order to rent the rest. Dive suit next, you can shop around for a talored fit. Regulator for the hygene and comfort aspect. BDC next, it will be compatable with the tank. Renting tanks is just about the same as buying, since you have to take them back to get them filled anyway and you will have to get tanks inspected periodically, visually and pressure tests are required at different intervals, if you own them.
If you don't have proper fitting Mask and Fins, these are what you need first. Nothing is more fustrating than diving with a leaking mask or one that is ill-fit. Doesn't matter about all other equipment if you can't see.

For Fins, you need something that will provide the proper propulsion for your diving style. My preference is for blade type fins (Scubapro Jet Fins or Mares Avanti Quattro) since these work with a variety of kicks. Make sure that you try the fin with the boot. Not all foot pockets are the same.

Snorkels are used only at the surface (or not used at all), so don't get anything fancy.

As for BCD vs Dive Computer vs Regulator, the decision should be BCD vs Regulator. BCD and regulator will increase your comfort in the water, while dive computer will extend your time. If you have poorly functioning BCD and regulator, it can be a fustrating, if not dangerous, time underwater. No dive computer means that you're just diving tables.

Between BCD and Regulator, my vote goes for the BCD. Assuming that your rental gear is well maintained, the BCD will have the most impact on your diving. Having proper buoyancy control obviously makes diving more fun, and people usually take 1-2 dives to begin to sort out a new BCD. So if you're on a dive vacation, and you need a rental BCD, then the first day of diving, you're adjusting the BCD, figuring out how it vents, positions air, where to clip things off, etc. If you have your own BCD, then you don't have to re-learn.

    To recap:

    1. Mask

    2. Fins

    3. Snorkel (or not)

    4. BCD

    5. Regulator.

    6. Dive Computer

    ';I concur with Dr. Dekelboum in that there is just not enough data or evidence to recommend the use of plugs for divers. The risks of complications underwater from malfunction or removal of an earplug are real and can potentially place the diver at increased risk for injury.';

You will get water in your ears. If you plug them off you can't equlibrate your inner ear. You should've learned this in dive class.

I recommend a refresher course before you get in the water again.
Plugs work better then anything i've ever tried. My cousin, he has tubes in his ears, so he has to use something to keep water out. He has tried many things (and so have i) and we both like using plugs the best. They seem to work the best too.

What are some good name brands of dive masks and snorkels?

Masks: Ocean Master, Cressi, Aqua Lung. If it's sold in a dive shop, it'll be a quality mask. You should be concerned more with fit here anyway. A good quality mask that doesn't fit is worse than a dollar store one that does fit. Not all makes of mask will fit your face.

Snorkels: Entirely up for grabs here as all the manufacturers seem to come out with new gimmicks every year and none seem to really out do another. Best bet here is to just go with your gut feeling, fit and a little advice from a sales clerk after describing what you're after, be it for scuba or just snorkeling. If scuba, then look for a folding one ( the tube can be collapsed in half) that can be stowed in a BC pocket. Is a diver able to dive deep without a face mask? Is one able to use the air tanks without a face mask?

Yes, divers don't need a mask to swim underwater or use of their scuba equipment. The mask is a piece of equipment to help them see better.

Yes, it is one of the requirements for you diving test.

    Good luck

RRIs a diver able to dive deep without a face mask? Is one able to use the air tanks without a face mask?
Yes, and yes. One of the requirements to pass certification is to swim and breath off your regs with no mask.
yes u can, that just helps u see better.

Wouldn't a dive mask work better than swim goggles?

I have both. The goggles are theoretically fog-free, but they fog anyways. They leak, even when tightly strapped on, and it's hard to see out of them anyways.

My dive mask never fogs, it feels much more comfortable, and it also keeps water out of my nose. Also, I can get corrective lenses for it that are much cheaper than prescription swim goggles.

The only drawback to dive masks is that it makes swimming too easy. That's why I force myself to swim without anything, goggles, masks, or nose plugs, on occasion. But, if you're going to 'cheat' by wearing something, why not use a dive mask?

I'm asking because I seldom see anybody at the pool with a dive mask, but almost everybody wears swim goggles.Wouldn't a dive mask work better than swim goggles?
go with the mask, why suffer????Wouldn't a dive mask work better than swim goggles?
    In response to your comments,

I told you ';why not,'; but if you choose to deny the facts...so be it... Report Abuse

You usually don't see people wearing diving masks in swimming pools because...

    - What works for you doesn't necessarily work for other people. For example, although your dive mask doesn't fog up, most other diving masks do fog up unless you spit on them or apply an anti-fog coating.

    - Not everyone has a problem with leaky goggles; in fact, I've worn my goggles for several years of swimming, and they've seldom leaked. When they did leak, it was because the goggles were poorly adjusted. The quality of the goggles also affects whether or not they are leaky.

    - Diving masks are typically larger than swimming goggles, and some people find that uncomfortable.

    - Most swimming goggles are cheaper than most diving masks.

    - It's more convenient to purchase swimming goggles than diving masks. For instance, swimming goggles are available at many department stores, (such as Walmart), where fewer diving masks are sold, if any.

    - Having not worn a diving mask before, and never finding a need to do so, many people are probably unaware of the advantages of diving masks that you mentioned, and won't bother trying because they're afraid they may waste time and money on something that may not work.

    - People typically associate ';swimming'; goggles with swimming, and ';diving'; masks with diving, so it may not be immediately obvious to people that wearing a diving mask to go swimming, is actually a possibility. On top of which, when one says, ';diving mask,'; many people probably think about those big, elliptical, (oval), ones...which may look rather strange when worn at a swimming pool.

And then there are personal preferences...if swimming goggles work better for you, then wear swimming goggles, if diving masks work better for you, then wear diving masks, etc.

Fins = Gives you more speed in the water (make sure they are not too big for you to kick with) Generally a rubber product

Snorkel = allows you to breathe while face down in the water (When you dive down, it will fill with water that you will blow out when you surface.) Plastic and silicone

  • How deep can a woman dive with mask and fins only, if she is not especially trained in diving?

Is the breath-holding time the limit or coping with the water pressure? Which is the way, she notices, that's the pressure gets too much??How deep can a woman dive with mask and fins only, if she is not especially trained in diving?
Because air can be compressed by adding pressure to it, pressure would be a concer to a skin diver. Water adds pressure (weight) which pushes on the air spaces in the body. These include, ears, sinuses, lungs, stomach and intestines.l Another artificial air space that is affected is the mask.

Scuba divers really only have to worry about the ears and mask air spaces as they descend because most other air spaces are equalized simply by breathing from their scuba cylinders and regulators.

Skin Divers on the other hand do not have that luxury.

The air in the lungs on a breath hold dive will compress with no means of equalizing them.

If your lungs are filled with air at the surface, they will compress to half their original size at a depth of 33 feet in salt water (34 feet in fresh water). Go another 33 feet deeper to 66 feet in salt water and they will compress to one-third their original size. Another 33 feet to 99 foot of salt water and the will compress to one-fourth their original size.

The pressure on the mask air space will begin to be noticable to the skin diver at about 7 or 8 ft. Skin divers can equalize the pressure in the mask by exhaling a bit of the air from the lungs into the mask through the nose. Masks have the nose enclosed in them for this purpose. Swim goggles should not be used any deeper than about 15 ft as it will begin to feel as though your eyes are being sucked out of your head (sorry to be so graphic).

The ears can be equalized by wiggling the jaw and swallowin while the skin diver descends. The skin diver can also equalize this pressure by pinching the nostrils together while exhaling through the nose. Please note that skin divers and scuba divers should avoid forceful equalization when using the second method as eardrum injuries could occur. Equalization of the ears should be done early and often as on descends beginning once at the surface and every few feet thereafter.

This should be done before any discomfort is felt. The skin diver will feel and hear a slight popping or clicking sound when they equalize their ears.

To extend bottom time, skin divers have been known to hyperventilate before going to depth. If this method is used, no more than 3 or 4 quick, deep breaths should be taken before breath holding. Any more than that and the skin diver could experience shallow water black out on ascent.

The hyperventilation is a trick to fool the autonomic nervous swystem and the brain into thinking that it doesn't need to inhales by blowing off excess carbon dioxide in the lungs which is the gas that triggers the brain to inhale. It takes the body longer to build up the trigger amount of CO2 when using hyperventilation.

The deepest that I have snorkeled is about 40 to 50 feet. The key is to get to know your limits and not to exceed them. I would suggest starting with shallower non hyperventilation dives and going a bit deeper following that. Your body will definitely let you know that you need to come back up. If you have good fins and strong leg muscles you can probably go deeper but again start shallow to acclimatize yourself first.

Women traditionally have a smaller lung capacity than a male that is the same body size, but they still usually win in an argument. How deep can a woman dive with mask and fins only, if she is not especially trained in diving?
Remember one thing,Going down is only half the battle, you've got to get back to the surface!OK,I'm a 6' male210lbs,I smoke 1pk.of cigs a day/approx.I spearfish approx 2-3x a wk.I can dive 80ft approx.on my 1st 3-4 dives w/ a hangtime of approx 90-100sec.that's max. After that depth%26amp;hangtime start to decrease. My girlfriend,5'7';125lbs,smokes maybe a pk%26amp;ahalf a/wk.comes w/me 1-2x a/wk.%26amp; can dive just as deep on the 1st dive+stays down longer, but after that...kaput!We,ve talked about it(she's DD),%26amp; she says her chest #1causes bouyancy issues, hence, being able to STAY down,#2@ pressure/Ata.her chest feels constricted,(this is strictly freediving, not scuba,%26amp; also w/o a weightbelt)Also factor in vis.cloudy vis.10ft-0ft changes the whole equation,It's like going down into a cup of coffee(it gets very dark@40ft.whereas diving in 50-100ft vis.you see all, therefore go deeper because there's a lot less Jaws Themed Music in your head!Lastly as afore mentioned surfacing is the other part you don't want 2forget,If you go too deep %26amp; surface too quick(panicking for air)you can have a shallow water blackout, which I always try to avoid! It's well documented, look it up,2 much2explain here.so anyway dive well w/i your personal limits only in the comfort zone+expand from there.Oh yeah the ear thing, chew a little gum while divingand /or keep flexing your jaw like when your on a plane.don't wait for earpain keep popping even if your not feeling alot of pressure.approx.every 10 ft underwater is a pressure change so keep that in mind.
It all depends on different aspects of the person. Her weight and height and if she has had any medical treatment in the past 10 years. The way that you can tell if the pressure is getting too much is if the woman gets light headed, dizzy or her ears start to hurt after they have popped(if your ears pop you can dive down about another 15ft of water before surfacing. Hope this helps :)
i spearfish and have gone 70 feet without a tank, but i have been doing it since i wa a toddler, the pressure is nothing as long as you can equelize. the thing that got to me is i needed air obviosley. But i dont know if the people that dive down for records the pressure hurts, hope i helped

How can you stop a dive mask from fogging up?

Just want to see what other tricks others doHow can you stop a dive mask from fogging up?
Step #1: Clean the inside surface of the mask. After manufacturing, there is a coating on the inside surface that needs to be removed. Use toothpaste (paste not gel) or a mild abbrasive (like Soft Scrub) to clean the inside surface. Don't just smear the toothpaste around on the lens. You really need to grind it in. Use some force.

Step #2: Using an anit-fogging agent (which is actaully very mild detergent) or spit, smear it on the inside of the mask. Dunk the mask a couple of times to rinse of the extra, and you should be good to go.

Step #3: If you completed both steps, and it fogs up again on a dive, I can pretty much bet you only smear the toothpaste around in the mask.

When student insist that they cleaned their mask ';with force'; and it still fogs, it must be my instructor magic that cleans that last time, because it doesn't fog once I clean it for them. How can you stop a dive mask from fogging up?
Doug's pretty well got it nailed, however I wouldn't use spit. Use the anti fog instead. The human mouth is one of the dirtiest places on the planet and contains an assortment of bacteria. You're opening yourself up to a possible eye infection.Anti fog works, is long lasting and dirt cheap.
I agree with what Doug says on the toothpaste. But just to add, I smear toothpaste on the lens even the night before I take a dive trip. Then just wash it before the actual dive. This always guarantees me a hassle free no fog dive.
    Spit on it.

Its just as good as all the other methods, but you'll never forget where you left your spit or suddenly run out when you most need it!

I use a little dab of liquid soap on the inside and rub it around, mine never steam up after that.
    spit ... anti-fog for windshields
spit in it and rub it around the glass

What can I use to keep my dive mask from fogging up?

Spit just doesn't do it for me...Anyother suggestions or products? What can I use to keep my dive mask from fogging up?

I have used this for hundreds of diving customers with no allergic reaction but if you do get irritation, discontinue. What can I use to keep my dive mask from fogging up?
do you scuba dive jade? Report Abuse

Seaweed or kelp (if it's available) has always worked for me.
I have heard that if you spit in it and smear it around it helps.

Also heard that cleaning it with toothpaste may help.

Try them out. Tell us at the group if any of them work. :)
Don't touch your inner's part of mask with fingers. When you want to clean it just use of shampoo.

After a period of time (Usually 3 months) your mask or goggles will lose its anti-fog protection. You can use an anti-fog spray to charge it again.
Spit in it... Thats right spit.... rub it around then rinse it a bit..

If thats too gross for ya use joy soap. but not too much.. rub it around and rinse a little
    anti-fog spray
Spit on the glass inside the mask.... and rub it with a smooth cloth.. or fingers if you have non.... but yes spit alot...

It stopped my mask from fogging up...

    It's quick , it's easy, its FREE.
a anti-fog spray you can buy it at a sporting goods store....
Most dive shops sell anti-fog spray. Spit has always done it for me. Maybe you are washing the spit out too soon. Try clearing it a couple of times underwater. I know it is a pain though.
Yepsitdaisie, De-fogger, is da stuff to use, but make SURE u get a good brand!! :o)
I'm sorry but everyone has told you to use your own spit. Well that didn't work for me either but my swimming instructors' saliva worked a treat.

Not nice I know, he did it before I even realised.

Any papers written on the idea of masking? What problems / customs of the society are reflected by the masking

I'm doing a piece of homework (quite an advanced one) and I need references to papers that refer to the use of mask and what it implies. it would be great if it's related to multiple identities... or do you have any ideas what problems of the society are reflected by the need of multiple identities for an individual?Any papers written on the idea of masking?
